Biljana Karovska is an artist and educator who researches ancient knowledge of plant colors through both traditional and contemporary approaches.
She creates naturally dyed and printed textiles with living botanical material, bringing diverse colors, marks, patterns and shapes in visual storytelling. In this way, she unravels the complex chemistries of nature and the living world.
Biljana graduated in Printmaking at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Skopje, N. Macedonia, in 2005. Ever-curious about the living world, she is also trained and experienced in ecology and biodiversity conservation projects, which has fueled the connection between environment and arts in her work, leading to her research natural dyes in 2018.
In her practice, Biljana collaborates with various professionals from the creative industries and regularly participates in educational events with Ethnographic Museum, Belgrade and Program for Sustainable Fashion – Belgrade Fashion Week.
Biljana presents her work on group exhibitions and solo projects. Her textile designs can be found in collections around the world.
Living near Belgrade, Serbia, she is setting up an educational art center and cultivating dye plants with a mission to establish a platform for plant-based artistic and design practices and support the rise of “soil to soil” production as part of renewable design systems.
